Many Thanks to Raymie Humbert

The appearance of tiny text IDs beginning in 1999-2000 made IDing Mexico network relayers much easier. Unfortunately, location names on those IDs often did not match the official Mexico station list. Therefore, I called them "unofficial" stations. Fernando Garcia told me years ago that Televisa and Azteca commonly use fill-in transmitters on the same and other channels for TV stations. Nevertheless, a number of DXers and others told me I was wrong about those locations being transmitter sites.

Raymie Humbert has done much research and found answers to many questions about local TV in Mexico. His information is invaluable, and I greatly appreciate the job he has done for TVDXers. He also proved that Fernando and I were correct.

An interesting article written by Raymie about "shadow" transmitters is here.

Raymie informed me that Jim Pizzi (and maybe others) received XHPAH-3 Hidalgo in the 1980s. As far as I know, Louisiana DXer extraordinaire Mike Perron was the first DXer in the U.S. to log Hidalgo by TV during my time in the WTFDA since 1994.

DXing has been a part of my life since the 1960s.
MT cover August 2010 SP cover June 2015

Over the years, I have DXed TV, FM, medium wave (AM), and shortwave. Although medium wave was always my favorite, TV DX consumes most of my DX time these days. My current TV log contains more than 1,100 TV stations logged since 1994.

While TV DX from Mexico has been the main focus of my DXing since the late 1990s, my TV log contains stations from forty-two inland U.S. states, D.C., Hawaii, five Canadian provinces, and five Latin America countries. As for Mexico, my log contains 144 TV stations from twenty-nine states.

Publisher and editor Ken Reitz of The Spectrum Monitor gave me the opportunity to write two articles about TV DXing in the digital TV era. The most recent is in the June, 2015, issue of The Spectrum Monitor. The August, 2010, issue of Monitoring Times magazine contained my first article about TV DXing. TV DX was featured on the cover of that issue. Many thanks to Ken.

My TV DX pictures were photographed using the following equipment:
• Canon AE-1 35mm camera (1996-2004)
• Snappy 2 screen capture (2003)
• Canon digital camera (2005)
• Canon A590IS digital camera (2009-present)

Thank God, my wife's health has been better the last few years. While the 2014 and 2015 E-skip season produced a less than normal level of DX and lower MUFs, I have managed to add several new logs via Es and tropo.

Antennas used by me in 2015

Antennas The big antenna is a highly-directional Winegard CA-5254 VHF-only antenna connected to RG-11 coaxial cable. The boom length is fifteen-and-one-half feet, and it is eighteen feet above ground level. The UHF eight-bay antenna to the right is an old-style Channel Master 4228 connected to a Winegard AP-4700 UHF pre-amplifier and RG-11 coaxial cable. Height above ground level is twenty-two feet. Both antennas are on rotators.
